The KC Royals continue to have a busy week, as they announced today that they have optioned pitcher Mike Mariot to AAA and recalled pitcher Casey Coleman. The move isn’t too surprising honestly. Mariot had a terrible showing last night against the Twins giving up five runs in the sixth inning.
Here’s what KC Kingdom’s own John Viril had to say on Mariot’s performance in today’s recap, which you can read here:
“Mike Mariot relieved Shields in the 6th and was nothing short of awful. Mariot only retired 1 of 7 batters he faced, going .1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 5 runs (2 earned). However, one runner reached on an error.”
Yeah, not too great.
Casey Coleman on the other hand has been in and out of AAA since earlier on in the season. Andy McCullough said on his blog that Coleman has a 1.93 ERA with Omaha. He also pitched two scoreless innings in previous major league appearances.
The bullpen was disastrous last night. The Royals need a good arm so hopefully Coleman can come in and make a difference.
The Royals have skidded since their 10-game winning streak a couple of weeks ago where they at one time possessed first place in the division. Now Kansas City is four and a half games behind Detroit. They need to get a move on if they want to compete for the division title.
The Royals take on the Minnesota Twins today. The series is tied at one win a piece.
