Holy Home Run, Batman. Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout got a-hold of a pitch from Kansas City Royals starter Jason Vargas in the 1st inning at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals came back from giving up this bomb, to take an 8-2 lead on Omar Infante‘s grand slam in the 3rd inning. Then, Jason Vargas melted down in the 5th by allowing 6 straight hits, including a 2-run shot to C.J. Cron—his second home run on the day. The current score is 8-6 in the top of the 6th inning.

Trout continues to make his case for the best player in baseball. He’s followed up his first two seasons with a total WAR value of 19.9, with what appears to be his best season yet. Trout is hitting .315/.404/.618 with 18 home runs, which is a far more advanced pace than any season in his 2 1/2 year career (30 HRs in 2012, and 27 in 2013). Trout’s current OPS of 1.022 is the highest of his career.

The Royals desperately need to hold onto this game to break out of the spiral they’ve been in since their 10-game winning streak ended a week ago. They have been 1-6 over the last week, while the Tigers have zoomed past the Royals with a 7-game win streak that has put them back atop the American League Central.
