2002 World Cup in South Korea

USA met Germany in the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea. USA had an amplitude of chances to open the scoring but never could get the finishing touch. It didnt help that Germany’s keeper was making incredible saves. He won multiple one on ones against Landon Donovan.

Germany was able to withstand the pressure from USA and deliver a dagger to the hearts of all the American fans when Christian Ziege ran up to a free kick and sent a bending ball into the box that met the head of Michael Ballack and found the back of the net to give Germany the 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.

This game will forever be remembered for the call that was never made, just 5 minutes after half time Landon Donovan sent in a great cross that fell for Gregg Berhalter and was directed towards goal. German Midfielder Torsten Frings was standing near the post blocking the goal and blocked the ball with his hand. The referee missed it and USA was livid to not be awarded a penalty kick.

That mistake by the referee proved to be costly for USA as the game would finish 1-0 in favor of Germany. USA was proud to make it to the final eight but were still left to think about what could have been. Germany went on to finish second in the World Cup after losing to Brazil 2-0 in the Finals.
