Every summer ESPN hosts the ESPY Awards to celebrate athletes and award them for their skills. KC Chiefs’ running back Jamaal Charles has been nominated for an ESPY this year, and quite a big one at that.
Charles had an outstanding year in 2013. He finished the season with over 1,200 rushing yards, 693 receiving yards and 19 total touchdowns (12 rushing, 7 receiving). Charles wasn’t just the leading rusher for Kansas City, but also the leading receiver. He basically carried the Chiefs’ offense and most definitely deserves to be nominated for this award.
Let’s take a look at Charles’ competition. Manning or Wilson probably have the best chances of beating Charles mainly because they’re quarterbacks, and today’s NFL is very much a quarterback driven league.
Manning had a record breaking season throwing for over 5,400 yards and 55 passing touchdowns. He might have gotten beat in the Super Bowl, but the rest of Manning’s 2013 season with the Broncos was pretty impressive.
Wilson didn’t have nearly as good of a season, but he’s coming off a Super Bowl win against the Broncos. Wilson didn’t just lead the Seahawks to a victory in the biggest NFL game of the season, he led them to a complete beat down of the Broncos (which I very much enjoyed).
McCoy obviously wasn’t on fire as much as Charles was, but he still rushed for over 1,600 yards in 2013. He had 11 total touchdowns (nine rushing, two receiving).
Kuechly is the only defensive player up for the award. He had 96 tackles, eight defended passes, four interceptions, and two sacks during his second season in the pros.
Back to Charles, it’s obvious that he deserves the win, but I still see the award going to Manning. The good part is that fans get to vote for the ESPYs so make sure you vote for Charles.
