KC Chiefs: Could Denarius Moore Be An Option

When the KC Chiefs decided not to address the wide receiver position this off-season, it instantly changed the landscape for a lot of fans on how they view this years offense.

While they did grab Oregon’s dynamic threat, De’Anthony Thomas, in the fourth round, Thomas did most of his work from the backfield in college so he isn’t a true receiver. It’s believed that he could be a Dexter McCluster type of player for the offense but that could be a bit much to ask from an undersized rookie.

We also forget that they did try to sign Emmanuel Sanders this off-season, but came up short to Denver in a very weird, and sketchy situation. So yes, they did try, but did they try hard enough?

As of now, the Chiefs are riding with Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery, A.J. Jenkins, Weston Dressler, Junior Hemingway, and DeAnthony Thomas as their top receiving targets.

That’s a pretty thin group in the grand scheme of things and while the Chiefs were able to make it work in Andy Reid‘s first year, the chances of that repeating in year two decrease significantly from the schedule alone.

There is no doubt the Chiefs need help with that group and the list of free agents isn’t great. After doing some research, I came across a couple of interesting articles concerning Oakland Raiders receiver, Denarius Moore.

Moore, has become quite the thorn in the Chiefs side over the past few seasons. In six career games vs. Kansas City, Moore has caught 22 passes for 368 yards and three TDs, including a five-catch, 82-yard one-TD performance against the Chiefs last year at Arrowhead.

He’s only entering his fourth season, as he was drafted by the Raiders in the 5th round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Where things get interesting with Moore and the Raiders are some of the reports coming out about his relationship with the coaching staff at the moment. Chris Wessling of NFL.com recently published an article about Moore falling out of favor with the Raiders.

"Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle recently noted that Andre Holmesseems to be bypassing Moore for the No. 3 role behind(James) Jones and Rod Streater.Formerly a jump-ball specialist at 6-foot-5, Holmes led the Raiders in receiving down the stretch last season. In fact, his 366 yards over the final five games ranked 15th among all NFL receivers.While Holmes continues to improve, the mercurial Moore has mystified the Raiders coaching staff with bouts of immaturity and inconsistency."

So how do the Chiefs play a roll in possibly landing Moore?

Well, a couple of things to think about here starting with a trade. The Chiefs won’t trade for him and with that, why would Oakland trade him within the division in the first place?

The only way that Moore becomes a Chief, is if the Raiders decide to cut him. His cap number for 2014, the final year of his rookie contract, is $1,463,513 according to overthecap.com. This means that he would be a little to no hit to the Raiders cap this year if he is cut, so there is no financial obligation to keep him on the roster.

The red flags that surround Moore are his inconsistency from game to game and his maturity. One week, he’ll look like a superstar and the next he won’t even make a catch. It doesn’t help his cause either, with all the coaching changes and different quarterbacks he’s had throwing to him the last 3 seasons.
