The KC Chiefs made a difficult decision on Friday afternoon when they cut ties with their Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers. Flowers had spent six seasons in Kansas City and was popular with the fans.
There had been speculation for weeks now about Flowers possibly leaving, as it’s no secret that both Alex Smith and Justin Houston want to make more money. Releasing Flowers definitely had something to do with that, and I think Sean Keeler of Fox Sports Kansas City said it best,
“Cutting Brandon Flowers wasn’t so much a Flowers thing — although there are conflicting reports as to how well No. 24 fit the Kansas City Chiefs’ new regime — as it was a money thing.”
Flowers may have been bitten by the injury bug more often than others, but he was one of the Chiefs’ best defensive players and he will most definitely be missed at Arrowhead. Many of us saw this coming, but it’s still difficult to say good-bye to one of the team’s best players.
What’s next for Flowers though? Who will he sign with?
The immediate speculation was that he would rejoin Scott Pioli in Atlanta and become a member of the Falcons. The Falcons currently have seven cornerbacks listed on their roster including 2013 first round pick Desmond Trufant and former KC Chief Javier Arenas.
There has also been talk that Flowers might head to Houston to reunite with Texans defensive coordinator and former Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel. Other potential landing spots are the Lions (which is who I initially saw Flowers being a fit for), Panthers, 49ers, Jets, and Raiders.
