Poll: Which Sports Team Do You Follow More in Kansas City?

There seems to be a generational gap in the fan base of Kansas City sports teams. The older generation is still very partial to the Royals, while the younger generations are more partial to the Chiefs.

For the sake of this article, I’m specifically focusing on the Chiefs and Royals.

See, for a guy like me, having grown up in Kansas City during the late 80′s and early 90′s, it was majority Chiefs football. By then, the Royals hadn’t even sniffed the playoffs since 1985, the same year they won the World Series, and the Chiefs were in the midst of a dominating era.

Now, that’s not to say that Kansas City hasn’t been loyal to baseball and we’re not passionate about our team. Lord knows that KC is starved for good baseball and I promise you, I love the Royals but I just don’t follow them like I do the Chiefs.

Perhaps I do have the wrong attitude about it but even if you find that to be the case, can you blame me? Kansas City was once known as a baseball town in the 70′s and 80′s but has been exactly opposite since.

I mean think about it. People my age only have memories of the Royals playing bad baseball. If you had a conversation with my pops, he would’ve told you how important the Royals were to KC and how opposite it was compared to now.

That reason alone is what creates the generation gap I sense.

He grew up with George Brett, Frank White, and Bo Jackson and I grew up with Joe Montana, Derrick Thomas and Tony Gonzalez.

And of course, you can always choose to like them equally, which is the way it should be but I’m just being honest. I’m more interested in the Chiefs than I am the Royals.

So just out of curiosity to see which one is more popular, I created and embedded a poll below. It’ll be interesting to see the votes!

Definitely the Chiefs for me, but that’s because I’m more of a football fan in general. I didn’t even get into baseball until a few years ago so before that, I had no interest in the Royals (especially since they were always so bad).

Through the bad times, through the terrible times, through the horribly terrible times, I have been a Royals fan. Oh I admit that on some days I feel I could just turn them off forever. But the next day the sun is shinning again and I can’t wait to root on my favorite team. It sure would be nice and much easier though if they could do some winning.

    • Joel Wagler

Me too. I wasn’t a Chiefs’ fan until I moved to the area in the mid 1980′s. Always been a Royals fan. Every year, I watch nearly every game, like a train wreck. I don’t know how I would behave if they actual made the playoffs and won a few games.

See, My dad grew up with both as he was born and raised in KC. He still preferred the baseball team being successful though he did love the Chiefs. I think the popularity of the NFL in general right now has a lot to do with it as well.

Like I said, I love both equally, I just don’t keep up with the Royals like I do the Chiefs

    I love that photo! Awesome!

Lol I seriously was thinking about you Joel when both writing this and trying to find the right picture. This article was spawned from some of our conversations.

  • Michael Tavis

Sporting! Though between the Chiefs and Royals I am more of a hardcore Chiefs fans and a casual Royals fan.

    • Josh Michaels

Lol, see, I knew a SKC comment was coming that’s why I established it early. I’m friends with plenty of people who prefer SKC over the other two.

      • Michael Tavis

The last time SKC and the Royals played on the same day, SKC outdrew them by almost 3000 fans. MLS is a growing league and Sporting is a big reason why. Plus they are the most successful KC team in recent memory.

        • Leigh Oleszczak

If it wasn’t for SKC, Kansas City sports fans would spend a lot of nights crying.

I follow the royals until July then it’s all chiefs. Gives me something to look forward to and no reason to get my hopes up (for the royals).
