KC Royals Recall Michael Mariot, Option Francisco Pena

The KC Royals announced today that they have recalled pitcher Michael Mariot from AAA and optioned catcher Francisco Pena to Omaha.

Pena didn’t spend much time out of Omaha, as he was just recalled on Tuesday. Pena was recalled to take some of the pressure off of Salvador Perez, but only saw the field once during his short few days in Kansas City.

Brett Hayes started at catcher for a few games, but Perez returned to action last night. Perez went 0-2 in yesterday’s 13-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Perez had been resting after aggravating his hand earlier in the week.

As for Mariot, the Royals probably felt that it was time to add another reliever to the bullpen. Last night the team used five different pitchers in a game that lasted until the 13th inning. So far this season, Mariot has struck out nine batters in 10 innings he’s appeared in. He’s allowed 10 hits and seven runs.

Today Kansas City takes on the Angels for the final match-up of the three-game series, which is tied up at 1 win a piece. Jason Vargas takes the mound for the Royals to square off against his old team.

A few starting line-up changes for today’s game include Jarrod Dyson leading off, while Nori Aoki takes a day off. Jimmy Paredes and Pedro Ciriaco will be the last two batters in today’s line-up.

Tomorrow the Royals return to Kauffman Stadium for a three-game series against the Houston Astros. Kansas City swept the Astros in Houston earlier in the season.
