Kansas City selected Ford with the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft. Fans had mixed reactions on the selection, as a lot of people were hoping that the Chiefs’ first round pick would be spent on beefing up the wide receiver position.
If the catastrophe in the playoffs last year taught us anything, it’s that offense isn’t the problem for the Chiefs. This team needs more help on the defensive side of the ball, and that’s where Ford will step in and hopefully make an impact.
People have speculated that Ford might have been drafted to learn from Tamba Hali and then to eventually be his replacement. Hali is aging and is due to make a lot of money over the next few years so it might be easiest for Kansas City to cut Hali and move forward with Dee Ford as a starter.
Ford signing his deal now means that every player the Chiefs drafted this year has signed. The two sixth round picks Zach Fulton and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif were the first players to sign followed by third round choice Phillip Gaines. Offensive weapon De’Anthony Thomas and quarterback Aaron Murray both signed within the last two weeks.
More news regarding Dee Ford is that he has officially changed his jersey number. He was going to wear number 90 and now will wear number 55. Fifth round pick De’Anthony Thomas has also made a decision regarding his jersey number and will don number one in training camp and preseason.
