Sloppy Defending Spoils Sporting Kansas City Home Send Off

There is no proper way to begin with this week’s Sporting Kansas City pre-game. Sporting met up with a Philadelphia Union squad last week that was riding a 9 game winless streak and Sporting was unable to capitalize on Philadelphia’s lack of form despite being at home in a send away game for Graham Zusi and Matt Besler.

We will skip the first half of the Philadelphia game as nothing noteworthy happened and it spares me from having to re-watch it as it was the ugliest half of soccer Sporting has played all year. The Union took the lead early in the second half when Danny Cruz got on the end of a cross right across the face of goal to put Philadephia up 1-0 in the 49th minute.

Sporting forward Dom Dwyer was able to even things up shortly after being subbed on for Claudio Bieler. Dwyer started the play by passing up to Paulo Nagamura who then laid it off for Dwyer before Dwyer with an absolute blast from the top of the box evened things up at 1-1 in the 80th minute.

The celebration was short lived because Philadelphia answered back immediately with a goal that summed up the entire game perfectly. Players ball watching and sloppy defending told the story all the way to the end. Andrew Wenger served a ball across goal to a waiting wide open Cristian Maidana who calmly slotted it past a frozen Eric Kronberg.

The game would finish 2-1 in favor of Philadelphia and to add insult to injury Sporting CB Aurelien Collin was pulled out of the game with a hamstring issue which is being called more serious than his previous hamstring injury this season.

Early reports suggest Collin will miss an upwards of two weeks which could spell doom for Sporting as they are already short Ike Opara who injured his leg earlier in the season and is out for the season.

Matt Besler who will be away on USMNT duties, Lawrence Olum who will be away on Kenyan National Team duties, Erik Palmer-Brown is listed as questionable, and defensive midfielder Oriol Rosell, who can also play CB is also listed as questionable.

We will see how Sporting decides to approach this set back Sunday when they travel to Chicago to face the Chicago Fire.
