Kansas City made Rice cornerback, Phillip Gaines, their third round selection Friday evening and the reaction seems to be pretty mixed. No one is really arguing that Gaines is a good player but that they would have rather seen the Chiefs take a receiver with the pick.
Really like that pick for the #Chiefs. Here in Houston people know what a stud Gaines is. Can play immediately.

This draft proves that the Chiefs LOVE AJ Jenkins for some reason. — Chase Snyder (@chiefssnyder19) May 10, 2014
If you wonder if the #Chiefs front office let the memory of losing a 38-10 lead fade away, you have your answer. Pass rush + speed at DB

Phillip Gaines seems to be a good value pick and he definitely fills a position of need. Kansas City scored 44 points on the road in a playoff game last year, and lost. Building the defense back up with speed in the front seven and secondary is the smart route to go. However, there might be some red flags with Gaines,
Gaines said he failed two marijuana tests in college. He said he was honest about it with teams.

I honestly don’t see this as that big of a deal. As long as Gaines has moved on from the mistake and learned from it, there shouldn’t be too much worry. His honesty with the teams show’s his character and he’s clearly talented. The more I study the player, the more I like what he brings to the table.
Having his speed in the secondary will definitely be an advantage and I’m sure it will come in handy when Sutton decides to send him on blitzes. If he can develop good man-to-man skills then the Chiefs got exactly what they needed out of this pick.
Now, lets keep our fingers crossed that some good receivers continue to slip into the 4th and 5th rounds.
