Breaking News: Naadir Tharpe Is Transferring

Naadir Tharpe is apparently leaving the Kansas Jayhawks and transferring to another school.

According to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com, and the Lawrence Journal World and KuSports.com, Tharpe is indeed transferring. KuSports.com has confirmed with Kansas Head Coach Bill Self that this is true.

Naadir Tharpe will not graduate early, so he will have to sit out a season before completing his last year of eligibility. He can get a waiver if his transfers to a school close to hone, according to Goodman, via twitter.

As KC Kingdom’s own Zach Blochlinger wrote this morning, the Jayhawks are very interested in point guard Devonte Graham. Goodman agrees and thinks Graham will be a good fit.

Tharpe leaving Kansas would certainly open up some potential minutes for Graham, as the Jayhawks only have sophomores Frank Mason and Conner Frankamp left on the roster as possible starting point guards. Both are small, and Frankamp is more of a shooter, although he was very good at protecting the ball last season.

Tharpe seemed fall out of favor with both the coaching staff and fans as he struggled to produce consistently down the stretch. As the team leader, Tharpe did not step to meet the challenge when Joel Embiid got hurt late in the season.

The team seemed rudderless on offense, and much of that lies at the feet of the point guard – be that right or wrong.

With the transfer of Tharpe, Bill Self now has two more scholarships to award if he so chooses.
