Coming off a 4-0 thumping of the Montreal Impact Sporting Kansas City look to continue their momentum into this weeks game against the New England Revolution. Sporting currently sits at the top of the table in the Eastern Conference with 11 points in 6 games played. The Columbus Crew are also sitting at the top with an equal 11 points in 6 games played.
New England Revolution drew their previous game against the Chicago Fire 1-1. New England currently sits in 6th on the league table in the Eastern Conference with 8 points in 7 games played. New England is currently tied with the Philadelphia Union at 8 points, but have a game in hand as Philadelphia has 8 games played to New England’s 7.
Sporting Kansas City and New England met four times in total last year. They had two regular season encounters and two playoff encounters. In the first leg of the playoff series against New England, Sporting fell 1-2 in New England, with Aurelien Collin being their lone goal scorer. New England’s goals came from Andy Dorman and Kelyn Rowe.
Sporting Kansas City returned home against New England down 2-1 on aggregate but that didn’t phase the future champs as they took the win at home 3-1 and winning the series on aggregate 4-3. New England’s Dimitry Imbongo leveled the score at 1-1 in the 70th minute and things were looking promising for the young New England squad to advance in the postseason until Seth Sinovic equalized the aggregate with a goal in the 79th minute.The two sides headed into extra time tied on aggregate at 3-3 until Argentine International Claudio Bieler put one into the back of the net off of a Benny Feilhaber assist in the 113th minute to give the home squad a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Sporting Kansas City had a 3-0 victory against New England in Kansas City on August 10th. Former Sporting forward Kei Kamara had 2 goals and Benny Feilhaber added the third in the second minute of added time with a wonderful free kick from just outside the box.
Sporting earned a hard fought 0-0 draw in their first meeting against New England on March 23rd. Graham Zusi and Matt Besler were both away with the US National Team.
Sporting is scheduled to meet New England two more times in the regular season. The next match up will come on September 3rd in New England. The third and final scheduled match up will come on September 26th in Kansas City.
