The Kansas City Chiefs had an impressive 2013 season and ended up with an 11-5 record. That record gave them the 23rd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, which is slated for the first weekend in May. The Chiefs have been linked with several different wide receivers in the first round, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will select a receiver. Perhaps the Chiefs will go down a more unexpected path and draft a linebacker with the 23rd pick. The best inside linebacker in this year’s draft is Alabama’s C.J. Mosley.
C.J. Mosley played at Alabama for four years and is the only inside linebacker projected to go in the first round of the draft. During his time as a member of the Crimson Tide, Mosley racked up 319 tackles, six and a half sacks, and five interceptions including three returned for touchdowns (Source: Sports Reference).

Nolan Nawrocki of NFL.com projects Mosley to be drafted within the first 15 picks, which means there’s a slim chance that he’ll still be around by the time the Chiefs are on the clock. If for some reason he is still available, he would be hard to pass up on.
“Respected leadership presence — lines up his teammates and directs traffic. Film junkie. Excellent attitude, effort, field intensity and overall energy. Exceptional football and personal character. Highly competitive. Humble, selfless team player. Outstanding football IQ. Scheme-diverse and versatile. Strong special-teams coverage performer.” – C.J. Mosley’s strengths according to Nawrocki
The Chiefs have some big names in the linebacker position, but it’s never a bad idea to think about the future. With trade rumors occasionally circulating around Tamba Hali, it shows that the linebackers in Kansas City aren’t tied there forever. While Hali and Derrick Johnson have been reliable players for the Chiefs, Justin Houston is in his prime and it would be a smart move to find another young linebacker to join him on the field in 2014. C.J. Mosley would fit that mold perfectly.
Ron Rang of NFL Draft Scout predicts Mosley will make it to the 23rd pick, but doesn’t think the Chiefs will pounce on him. Rang thinks Mosley will end up with the New Orleans Saints with the 27th overall pick.
“Mosley does a nice job using his length and lower body fluidity to keep himself clean through a crowd and finishes at the ball, wrapping and driving through his target. He is very smart and keeps his eyes on the ball to track and attack and rarely makes mental mistakes, which is a result of his high football IQ and preparation skills.” – Rang
