Todd McShay of ESPN, revealed his latest mock draft today and his choice for the Kansas City Chiefs at number 23 over all is a position most of us expect but, I don’t think it’s a name anyone is thinking first.
McShay has the Chiefs taking Indiana wide receiver, Cody Latimer. Very interesting, as his name has been shooting up draft boards lately along side Brandin Cooks of Oregon State. You can read the entire mock draft with this link. Here’s what McShay had to say about the draft choice,
This is the big surprise pick of the first round. He might not go off the board quite this early, but I was blown away by his game when I finally got to study his tape recently. He does a great job of getting off the press, has extremely reliable hands and is a threat after the catch — three things that make him a perfect fit for a West Coast-style offense. He is dealing with a foot injury but his healing is ahead of schedule, and he recently ran in the 4.4-range at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. FSU’s Kelvin Benjamin is another possibility here if the Chiefs are looking to go in a different direction at receiver.
Latimer is coming of an excellent season with Indiana, catching 72 passes for 1,096 yards and 9 touchdowns (via ESPN.com). As McShay noted, Latimer could be a perfect fit for what Andy Reid is looking for with his ability to make plays after the catch. Alex Smith is very accurate with his mid range throws so having a guy that can run after the catch is important for the offense.
The Chiefs having interest in guys like Emanuel Sanders and DeSean Jackson, implicates they want a guy with speed that can stretch the field as well and seeing that Latimer is 6’2″ and runs a 4.4 forty time, he could be a guy that goes deep. I watched his highlights immediately after reading McShay’s mock and I gotta say, he does wow you on film. I posted that same highlight reel below.
What do you guys think of Cody Latimer becoming the next receiver for the Chiefs? I think he has a lot of potential and wouldn’t be opposed to the pick.
