Bashaud Breeland, Cornerback: Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report

With only six picks in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs might have some difficulties filling in the loose ends on their roster. One position on the team that needs addressing is at the cornerback position. The secondary was torched badly in the second half of the season so the Chiefs needs to consider picking up a corner in this year’s draft. It seems that wide receiver might be the top priority for Kansas City, but the team could easily pick up a talented corner in the later rounds of the draft. One such corner is Bashaud Breeland of Clemson.

Breeland may not necessarily be a number one or two cornerback right away, but he would fit into the Chiefs’ defense well. Kansas City has several cornerbacks on the roster such as Brandon Flowers, Sean Smith, Marcus Cooper and recently signed Chris Owens, but it wouldn’t hurt for the team to draft a franchise cornerback.

“Athletic and loose-hipped. Fluid movement skill. Quick-footed. Can shadow, mirror and stay in phase. Plays with a sense of urgency and is aggressive supporting the run. Good back-side lateral-pursuit effort.” – Breeland’s strengths according to Nolan Nawrocki of

Some complaints on Bashaud Breeland are that he doesn’t have elite speed and needs to work on his timing. He also has been involved in some on the field drama, as he was ejected from a game for a helmet to helmet hit on Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston (Source: Dane Brugler of NFL Draft Scout).
