Kansas City Chiefs Likely to Draft Receiver

The 2014 NFL Draft is a month away and the Kansas City Chiefs own the 23rd overall pick. The Chiefs have several different positions that need attention, but unfortunately only have six total picks including the 23rd pick, a third, fourth, fifth and two sixth round picks.

What position will the Chiefs decide to fill in the first round? Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco of CBS Sports thinks the Kansas City Chiefs will draft Oregon State wide receiver Brandin Cooks with the 23rd overall pick. (Note: I previously covered Cooks in a scouting report, which you can read here).

“They have to get help for Dwayne Bowe. It’s as simple as that.” – Prisco on why the Chiefs will draft Cooks in the first round

Prisco isn’t the only one out there thinking Cooks will be coming to Kansas City. Shehan Peiris of Bleacher Report thinks the Chiefs will be taking the Oregon State star in the first round as well.

“The Kansas City Chiefs sorely need another receiver to pair with Dwayne Bowe. As a team without many other major needs, the Chiefs can be aggressive in plugging up that hole on their roster and target a top-notch receiver in the first round.” – Peiris on why Cooks will be a Chief

Dane Brugler of CBS Sports agrees that the Chiefs will select a receiver with their first rounder, just not Cooks. Brugler thinks Marqise Lee of USC will be sporting a Chiefs jersey next season (Note: I previously covered Lee in a scouting report, which you can read here).

“Lee is explosive down the field and if he stays healthy, he’ll provide a productive option for Alex Smith opposite Dwayne Bowe.” – Brugler on why the Chiefs will draft Lee

  1. Allison Bell says:

I think Jordan Matthews willbe the best receiver in this draft class, but since we won’t get him I say go Cooks he has really great hands. Go Chiefs!!!

    • berttheclock says:

If he can get open and if he stops dropping passes. He had major problems at the combine against more aggressive defensive backs. He is a Jonathan Baldwin clone. I really believe reading the negatives from scouting reports can be far more important than reading the rave positives. The scouting reports for Baldwin before that draft was he was not aggressive enough against tough D-backs who jammed him. But, so many only read about his leaping skills in the end zone. The negs were proven to be very correct. There are far better defensive backs on a regular basis in the NFL than those in college.

      • Josh Landers says:

I watched some highlights of Baldwin in college and even in the highlights he was almost never open. That, in itself, should’ve been a red flag to not draft him.

I began the chant for Cooks over two months ago, but, now, I would not be upset should there be a late panic trade up by such as the Niners, where we would drop to their 30 pick and end up with two extra picks, a late third and a seventh. But, one other thing which might affect Cooks and the 23 pick is the 22 pick by Philly where, due to dismissing Jackson, they really need a Cooks or Beckham type receiver.

However, with the depth in the receiving corps for this year’s draft, the Chiefs will draft a wide out, in fact, they might end up taking two. Cooks or Beckham would be gravy for the Chiefs, but, until that time some 33 days away, who can really tell.

  3. Jacob says:

I might just jump off the Cooks bandwagon because of this. I have a very hard time ever agreeing with Prisco….

  4. Stacy D. Smith says:

Cooks would be a great addition to this offense. I’m all for that!
