Darqueze Dennard, Cornerback: Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report

The Kansas City Chiefs hold the 23rd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. One of the positions the team needs to address is cornerback. Brandon Flowers has been solid for the Chiefs, but the team needs someone opposite Flowers. Darqueze Dennard of Michigan State is one of the best corners headed to this year’s draft.

Dennard played for Michigan State for four years and totaled 167 tackles and 10 interceptions, including one pick six (Source: Sports Reference). Nolan Nawrocki of NFL.com mentions that Dennard started all 14 games during his final season as a Spartan and had a career high four interceptions. Here’s what Nawrocki lists as strengths for Dennard,

“Outstanding size with a well-distributed frame. Good competitive playing speed. Transitions cleanly in man-off coverage. Very good eyes, anticipation and reactive quickness. Good pattern recognition — sorts out what he sees quickly. Likeable personality. Very accountable leader by example. Brings intensity to the field and plays with urgency. Highly confident and competitive.”

Darqueze Dennard would bring a lot of positivity to the Chiefs and to the defense, which struggled toward the back half of the 2013 season. He’s young, but he has played some good football in college and would hopefully continue to produce big plays for Kansas City in 2014.

Dennard is ranked as the second best cornerback in the draft, behind Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert. He is considered to be the 16th best overall player in the draft according to NFLDraftScouts.com. With that said, Dennard has had some issues with injuries during his college career, which could be concerning.

The chances of Kansas City drafting Darqueze Dennard are not high. Not because he isn’t talented, but the opposite. Dennard will more than likely be off the board by the time the Chiefs are even on the clock. Rob Rang of NFL Draft Scout thinks that the Pittsburgh Steelers will snatch Dennard at pick number 15.

He could be a good pick but I’m still hoping to trade down.

  2. Tony Parker says:

flowers was not solid last year and we need someone to replace him not play opposite of him.

Wait…did u forget Sean smith is the #1 cb? Flowers ended the year the #3. We need a true #2 cb. Cooper stepped up nice but he is better depth instead of a pure #2.
