Sporting Kansas City announced on Wednesday that they have recalled goal keeper Jon Kempin from his loan with OKC Energy FC. The 20 year old goal keeper will be available for this Saturdays game against Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park. Kempin is set to then re-join OKC Energy FC for their Monday match up against LA Galaxy II.
OKC Energy FC is Sportings’ USL Pro loan affiliate along with Orlando City. Jon Kempin joined OKC on loan in march and has been training under their head coach who happens to be former Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Kempin also plays for the USMNT U-20 squad and is a Leawood, Kansas native.
Sporting Kansas City backup goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum who they acquired from the Columbus Crew in the off-season injured his right ankle and is questionable for the game this Saturday. Sporting Kansas City starting goalkeeper Eric Kronbergs‘ wife Jennie gave birth to their daughter Kaitlin Lee Kronberg Tuesday and we would like to send a congratulations to them.
There has been no official word on whether Eric Kronberg will play, but there is no reason to expect that he wont. Jon Kempin was likely recalled to be the backup GK in the event that Andy Gruenebaum is unable to suit up.
Presently, Sporting KC is sitting in second place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 7 points, two behind the Columbus Crew. They are a couple of late scores in a couple of matches away from being in fist place.
