PITCHING MATCH UP
Jason Vargas Vs. Max Scherzer: Vargas attempts to fill the void left by Ervin Santana in the rotation, and will face the reigning Cy Young winner in Max Scherzer. Vargas is coming off a season in which he missed several starts due to a blood cot. He put up a 4.02 ERA and a 1.387 WHIP for the Angels. Scherzer, a former Missouri Tiger, was brilliant in 2013, going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a league leading (for starters) .970 WHIP.
Outside of Salvador Perez‘s 4 hits on Opening Day, the Royals mustered very little offense. They scored all three of their runs in the 4th inning. The hitting hero for the Tigers was an unlikely one. Aging veteran Alex Gonzalez, brought in to fill the gap left when Jose Iglesias went down with a season ending injury, drove in the tying run with a triple in the 7th, and the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th. The Royals need more out of the top 2 spots in their line up where Norichika Aoki and Omar Infante went 0-9 with a walk on Monday.
