PITCHING MATCH UP
James Shields vs Justin Verlander: The Royals ace had a terrific season for Kansas City in 2013. He went 13-9, with a 3.15 ERA and 1.238 WHIP. He worked 228.1 innings, and struck out 196. He will be facing a former Cy Young winner in Verlander, who went 13-12 in 2013, with a 3.46 ERA and 1.315 WHIP. He went 218.1 innings and struck out 217. Except for K’s, Shields’ numbers were better than Verlander’s last season, but the Tigers’ ace is a formidable presence on the mound. This should be a terrific pitching match up.
The Tigers lost Prince Fielder to a trade, Omar Infante to free agency, plus Andy Dirks and Jose Iglesias to injury. The Tigers add Ian Kinsler at second, rookie Nick Castellanos at third, Rajai Davis in left, and Alex Gonzalez at shortstop. The Royals added Infante at second and Norichika Aoki in right, and are hoping Alex Gordon, Bill Butler, and Mike Moustakas improve on the their sub par performances from a year ago.
These two teams could be the cream of the crop in the AL Central, and even though this is just the first game, a win by the Royals will give them confidence going forward in that they can overtake the Tigers for the division championship.
