Breaking News: Eagles Release DeSean Jackson, Should The Kansas City Chiefs Make A Move?

According to several reports, including a statement from the Eagles themselves, wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been released, so let the Jackson to Kansas City speculation begin, again.  The obvious connection is between Jackson and head coach, Andy Reid. Jackson has had some of his best seasons under Reid and the Chiefs need help at the position. Here’s some tweets on his release,

It all makes sense now as to why the Eagles wanted to rid of Jackson, other than his high salary rate. Jackson has been rumored to have relations with a gang, according to several reports. Elliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com wrote a great article about Jackson’s off the field issues, even going back to when Jackson lost his father in the early 2000’s. Shorr-Parks writes,

"“the Eagles’ apparent interest in jettisoning Jackson likely has little to do with his performance on the field or a big-money contract that could squeeze the team’s salary cap. Rather, sources close to Jackson and within the Eagles’ organization say, it’s Jackson’s off-field behavior that concerns the front office. A bad attitude, an inconsistent work ethic, missed meetings and a lack of chemistry with head coach Chip Kelly are the reasons, sources told NJ.com. And when the Eagles looked more deeply into why Jackson was missing meetings, they found that his friends were becoming a more powerful — and negative — influence in his life.”"

Great stuff on Jackson from NJ.com, you can check that article out on either one of the links I posted. Jackson is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL, so some one is going to give him a contract. The question is, will Kansas City be one of those teams interested in doing so? Andy Reid could certainly be a positive influence on the young mans life again, but is he worth the risk?

Jackson (27) is coming off career highs in catches (82), and yards (1,332) including 9 receiving touchdowns in 2013 accoriding to NFL.com’s stats and info. His ability to burn defense’s deep can change games and Philly will certainly miss that production. So again, asking if he’s worth the risk, his production is certainly persuasive but, does it out weigh the off field issues? Philly didn’t seem to think so.

Andy Reid has had his own issues with Jackson in the past, when Reid suspended him for one game in 2012 for missing team meetings. This behavior obviously continued under new head coach, Chip Kelly in Philly so what reason do we have to think anything has changed for Jackson and his attitude?

The other thing about this situation is the Chiefs cap space. Kansas City simply cannot get into a bidding war with another team. If the Chiefs can get some restructures done before the signing, or, Jackson is willing to sign a 1 year deal that is affordable for the Chiefs, then its a possibility. Other than that, I just don’t see it happening.

Personally, I would love to have a talent like Jackson on the roster. He could solidify the receiving corps right away, AND, take over the role of kick/punt returner and help change games for the Chiefs. But, at the same token, I do not want a guy that will cause distractions for the team with off the field issues, especially if he is supposed to be one of the best players on your team.
