Triple Play Podcast - Episode 8

Hunter, Matt and Reese discuss MLB Advanced Media’s planned roll out of awesome fielding statistics on the week’s Triple Play Podcast. The new statistics come as a result of an MLB partnership with a third party. They will roll out as a broadcast tool that shows the arc of fly balls and the routes taken by fielders to reach the balls in play. It will also have all sorts of cool aspects that will leave bloggers drooling in envy.

They also discuss the shameful news that the Philadelphia Phillies snitched on two draft picks for using agents. Ohio State Ben Wetzler was suspended for 11 games of his senior season because the Phillies were petty and couldn’t stand that they wasted a draft pick on him. Although, as pointed out in the show, the Phillies waste all of their draft picks so it would not have mattered.

The Royals are somehow still planning to start the season without a utility player. The team currently plans on using Mike Moustakas as a backup shortstop and Danny Valencia as a backup to Omar Infante. The group discusses how feasible this really is.

They continue their previews of AL Wild Card Contenders this week with a long discussion about the team that bagged Robinson Cano, the Seattle Mariners. Their acquisitions of Logan Morrison and Corey Hart can only help their offense, but their rotation is full of questions. While Felix Hernandez will probably dominate, Iwaduma is injured and Taijuan Walker as well. They have a long list of rookie pitchers that may or may not step up to the task and fill out the rotation.
