“The Chiefs need to upgrade at cornerback and safety and would also like to add some D-line help, but they could also use some new weapons on offense and Beckham is a good value pick here. He and Oregon State’s Brandin Cooks are vying to be the fourth wide receiver in this class, but Beckham is a little bigger and stronger than Cooks, and he’s a little more dynamic in terms of his playmaking ability even though Cooks ran a faster 40 time at the combine. He could also help the Chiefs in the return game.”
Guys like McShay and Mel Kiper never predict these things 100% accurately, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re talking about. Personally, I hold McShay’s opinion a little higher than most of these mocks, as he has inside tracks to a lot of teams. He has Beckham Jr., a standout receiver from LSU that has potential to be a dominant player not only on offense, but as a return man for special teams as well, as his fourth best receiver on the board.
With the possibility of Dexter McCluster leaving the team via free agency, the Chiefs potentially have two voids to fill. Beckham Jr. could certainly do so, but is he the better option over Marquise Lee if he’s still available?
McShay believes the New York Jets will take Lee with the 18th overall pick. The other notable player Chiefs fans have been raving about is safety prospect, Ha’sean Clinton-Dix of Alabama. McShay has him being taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 15th overall pick.
At the end of the day, we have no idea how this thing will play out. I wouldn’t mind seeing Beckham Jr. be taken by the Chiefs with that first pick, as long as he’s the best option available for them at that time.
