After a 12-2 season, the Missouri Tigers have given their head football coach, Gary Pinkel a contract extension that will pay him around $3 million per year. The contract extends Pinkel to the Tigers through the 2020 season, making it a 6 year extension.

Pinkel was a coach that was on the hot seat headed into last season. The Tigers were coming off a 5-7 record after their first season in the SEC, but Pinkel and his staff quickly turned things around during their second year. Missouri won the SEC East, earning their first ever trip to the SEC championship game in Atlanta, and finished the season with a sensational victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the AT&T Cotton Bowl.

Gary Pinkel has caught a lot of heat with his tenure in Missouri, but there is no denying that he’s the best head football coach in the schools history. In 13 seasons at Missouri Pinkel’s teams have gone 102-63 with nine bowl appearances. He released a statement to the press soon after signing the extension saying,

I’m very honored and proud to be the coach at Mizzou, and I appreciate the opportunity,” said Pinkel in the official release. “We will work very hard to continue to build our program and to graduate our players. It’s important for our program to keep moving forward and build on a solid foundation. I’m pleased that my assistant coaches continue to get recognized for the work they do. We are fortunate to have a great staff at Mizzou.”

As mentioned before, the deal extends Pinkel to the 2020 season giving him a raise from $2.8 million in 2013 to roughly $3.1 million in 2014. His deal is also loaded with incentives, including bonuses of $100,000 for another SEC East title, $200,000 for an SEC title and $450,000 for a national title. (via CBSsports.com and ESPN.com)

For Missouri fans, I’m sure there are mixed emotions on this extension. But for me, this is great news. Pinkel has earned this extension and he’s the best option for the Tigers at this point and time. Let’s just hope his success continues.
