THREE KEYS TO THE GAME
1. GUARD THE GUARDS: The Sooners get 43 points a game from Buddy Hield, Cameron Clark, and Jordan Woodard. Clark went off for 32 against the Jayhawks on January 8th in Norman, and Kansas will need to do a much better job containing these perimeter players. Naadir Tharpe continues to struggle on defense. He has trouble staying in front of his man on the ball, and even the announcers on Saturday were commenting on his poor defense away from the ball. He stands with his arms at his sides, looking around. He loses his man on a regular basis. He cannot do this against Oklahoma.
2. DUPLICATE DEFENSE AND INTENSITY: The Jayhawks had their best all around game on Saturday against Texas, and it was sparked by the best defense and intensity Kansas has displayed so far this season. Kansas needs to duplicate those things against the Sooners. Hopefully, the Jayhawks can see how their efforts on defense led to fun and games on offense. Both teams really like to run, so this game should be fun to watch. Kansas can blow it up like they did against Texas with some close pressure on defense.
3. MAKE IT 10 IN A ROW: If Kansas can hold off the Sooners at home, they will lock down at least a share of their 10th consecutive Big 12 regular season championship, a fantastic accomplishment for the program. They need to win 2 or their last 4 games to secure the league title outright. Tonight would be a great step, in front of the Allen Fieldhouse faithful. There were times this season when a 10th title didn’t look probably. As usual, Bill Self had his charges ready for Big 12 play. As always, the conference championship runs through Lawrence, Kansas.
