During the off season, the main thing on most Kansas City Chiefs fans’ minds is the NFL Draft. Last year was an exciting off season because Kansas City held the first overall pick in the draft. This year, however, the Chiefs won’t be selecting their new teammate until pick 23.

With the draft in mind, I thought it might be fun to look back at Kansas City’s first round picks over the last ten years and discuss how their careers have gone whether they’re still with the Chiefs or with another team. I’ll also touch on notable players drafted if they weren’t a first rounder.

Today, we will take a look back at some draft picks in the years 2004 through 2008, and tomorrow seasons 2009 through 2013.

The Chiefs did not have a first round pick in 2004 because they traded it to the Lions. For the most part, 2004 seemed to be a pretty bland draft for Kansas City, but it was the year Jared Allen was selected in the fourth round. Allen played with Kansas City until the 2008 season when he was traded to Minnesota. Allen is expected to become a free agent this offseason.
