The Wichita State Shockers (22-0, 9-0) took down the Loyola (Ill) Ramblers (8-13, 3-6) Tuesday night to remain one of three undefeated teams in the country.
The Shockers totally out manned the Ramblers in the first half by doubling Loyola’s point total by intermission, 36-18. They coasted through the second half for the 57-45 win.
Cleanthony Early was the only Shocker to score more than 7 points as the Ramblers had now answer for the star forward. Early poured in 23 points on the night. Fred Van Vleet had the better all around game though but pulling in 8 rebounds to lead his team, and dishing out a game high 9 assists. He scored 3 points and had two steals.
The game was ugly from a shooter’s point of view. The two teams combined to go 37 for 103 from the field – just 35.9%. Loyola was 18 for 51, for 35.3%, and Wichita State was just one shot better, going 19 for 52 for 36.5%.
All of that horrid shooting led to a lot of rebounds and the Shockers just dominated the glass, out rebounding the the Ramblers 44-28.
Wichita State climbed to number 4 in the nation this week in the AP poll, 3rd in the Coaches poll, 8th in CBSSports.com’s rankings, and 9th in the CBSSports.com RPI. (You can view all four rankings right here.)
The Shockers are playing inferior competition but there are not slipping up, and giving any of these teams from the Missouri Valley Conference an opportunity to knock them off. They are playing with a workman like efficiency, winning most of their games comfortably.
Each game takes them closer to an undefeated regular season, and they are starting to gain some national attention. Their game with the Evansville Aces on Saturday will be broadcast on ESPNU at 2 p.m. CST.
