Kansas City Royals Notes: Justin Maxwell, Rex Hudler, Royals Caravan

Justin Maxwell has signed a deal with the Royals to avoid arbitration in 2014. Dick Kaegel reports Maxwell’s salary will increase from $492,500 to $1.325 million. Before agreeing to the deal Maxwell sent in a filing number of $1.7 million while the Royals offered $1.075 million. News of Maxwell’s signing was released via Royals twitter.

Maxwell was acquired at the trading deadline in a deal that sent minor leaguer Kyle Smith to the Houston Astros. In 35 games Maxwell hit .268/.351/.505 with five home runs and 17 RBI. He also hit the Royals most memorable home run since Carlos Beltran‘s walk-off on Opening Day in 2004. Re-live the awesomeness below.

Rex Hudler and the gang are returning for the 2014 season, according to Royals vice president for communications and broadcasting Mike Swanson. Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star has you’re much needed Hudler quote.

“It’s really fun to go to the ballpark and see the excitement on these Royals’ fans’ faces, and I’m looking forward to a playoff game this year. I’m sure that’s what I’m thinking, even these guys coming to camp here.”

Uncle Hud will be joined by Ryan Lefebvre, who is stunningly in his 16th season with the Royals. Seriously, he’s been here for 16 years now. Also returning is Steve Physioc, who will jump between the TV and radio booths as needed.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Denny Matthews will return to the radio booth for his 46th season. Swanson tells Grathoff that Matthews will keep about the same schedule as last season. Matthews did not go on the road with the Royals on select extended road trips in 2013.
