Kansas’ basketball’s young batch of uber talented freshman have taken a little longer to gel than most fans would have hoped, but the flashes have been spectacular. Maybe no flash was as bright as Joel Embiid’s move against New Mexico on Saturday in Kansas City.
Embiid has been playing basketball for the equivalent of two weeks in comparison to some of his more hyped teammates, but his natural athleticism and raw skills are so great that his lack of experience hasn’t been too much of a factor for him early. His ability to block shots at a high rate, move smoothly around the basket, and his soft hands have all been better than advertised.
This skill set has been compared a lot to Hakeem Olajuwon, who was referenced by Fran Fraschilla in the video above. Should Embiid’s game develop into something similar to Olajuwon’s, who is one of the greatest centers to ever play the game, then Kansas is in line for one heck of a second half of the season.
But for now, Kansas fans are going to have to be patient as Andrew Wiggins and Embiid figure out the college game against some of the best competition the NCAA has to offer this season. So while we wait, ask yourself it Emiid’s game looks similar the video below.
