It was a big week for the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team this past week and they were well rewarded. Last Tuesday, they defeated the Duke Blue Devils in Chicago, 94-83. Yesterday, the Jayhawks were elevated to number 2 in the nation in the AP poll, behind Michigan State, who beat Kentucky in Chicago last week.
Kansas only jumped to third in the Coaches poll and the CBSSports.com Top 25 (plus 1) ranking. In both of these polls, the defending NCAA Champion Louisville Cardinals moved up to second.
Other teams of local interest that made the polls this week include Oklahoma State (7th in AP and CBS, 9th in Coaches), Iowa State (21st in AP, 15th in CBS, unranked in Coaches), Baylor (20th in AP, 21st in Coaches, and 22nd in CBS), and Wichita State (14th in AP, 16 in Coaches, and 21st in CBS).
In other Jayhawks news, Perry Ellis was named the co-Big 12 Player of the Week, along Iowa State’s Melvin Ejim. Ellis carried the Jayhawks offensively for parts of the game in route to scoring 24 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. He also recorded three steals in the game.
His teammate, freshman sensation Andrew Wiggins earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors for his 22 point performance against the Blue Devils.
It will probably not be the last time either player wins a conference award this season.
The Kansas Jayhawks Women’s basketball team has started off on a high note. After back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances in the NCAA tournament, the Lady Jayhawks are 3-0 early on this year.
They have victories over Oral Roberts, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and Creighton. Junior forward Chelsea Gardner leads the team with 22.3 points a game.
The Lady Jayhawks are back in action on Wednesday when they take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road.
The men’s team plays Iona tonight in Allen Fieldhouse.
