Yesterday, Deadspin released a reader’s story that he had met Todd Haley at a bar the night before the Steelers season opener against Tennessee. In said story, it is alleged Haley wrote “Chiefs Suck” on a napkin and called a Reader’s buddy “gay.”
Today, according to Pro Football Talk, Haley will meet with reporters – something he does every week around this time – and admit he wrote “Chiefs Suck” on an autograph, but deny he used any kind of slur in an argument with the Reader’s friend.
Via Pro Football Talk:
[Haley] and his family have been staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania while their house is being refurbished. Haley will also explain that he and his wife went down to the bar after their five kids were asleep.
… Per the source, Haley’s recollection of the exchange is that it was lighthearted, with no confrontation or arguments or improper comments.
Technically, writing “Chiefs Suck” is no big deal, but the slur could have been an issue had it been proven. It’s a good idea for him to get out in front and nip that part of the story in the bud. While it wouldn’t surprise me if Haley actually used that term, I believe him when he says the situation was lighthearted.
Still, the “Chiefs Suck” thing is annoying. It’d been different had he said “Pioli Sucks.” As a result, I’ll be boycotting Bud Light until Budweiser releases a statement that Haley is an ass.
