Royals Sign Carlos Pena, Recall Danny Duffy, & Move Wade Davis to Bullpen

In just a couple of tweets this afternoon, Fox Sports Midwest’s Joel Goldberg announced a flurry of activity today from the Kansas City Royals.

The first juicy tidbit was that the Royals had signed Carlos Pena, who was released by the Houston Astros earlier in the season.

Pena, 35, has always been a low average, high walks, good power sort of player through his long career. For his career, his slash numbers indicate the good and bad of Carlos Pena – .233/.348/.465/.813. In 2012 and 2013, those numbers have deteriorated significantly – .202/.328/.353/.681. Pena has always been kind of a three outcome hitter – home run, strikeout, or walk. he has 285 career home runs, 1563 strikeouts, and 813 walks.

While Pena will be reporting to Omaha, MLB rosters will expand in a few days. Look for Pena to join the Royals, probably as a left-handed pinch hitter in September, as the Royals make one more desperate reach for the post season.

In Goldberg’s other big news, Wade Davis is being removed from the rotation and moved to the bullpen. The Royals will recall Danny Duffy to take his place. Duffy will start tomorrow, according to Goldberg, and Bruce Chen on Thursday.

As KC Kingdom pointed out last week, Wade David has been horribly inconsistent all season, with almost half of his starts being brilliant (ERA under 2 in 11 starts), but the other half being about as awful as possible (ERA over 10 in 13 starts). Duffy should give the Royals a chance to win those starts than Davis, and it will help get Duffy prepared to take a big step forward in 2014.

The Royals will need to make a pair of moves very soon to make room for Duffy and Luke Hochevar, who should return from paternity leave in the next day or so.

Update: The Royals also traded farmhand Quintin Berry to the Boston Red Sox for Clayton Mortensen. Mortensen, 28, has appeared in 74 major league, 13 has a starter for 5 teams over 5 seasons. His career ERA is 4.68, and he sports a 1.440 WHIP. He has thrown 43.2 innings for AAA Pawtucket with a 2.47 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
