Royals Recap: Walk-Off Single By Alex Gordon; Ervin Santana Goes 8

Good pitching and timely hitting generally translates into victories and that is what happened Sunday afternoon at Kaufman Stadium. Ervin Santana took care of business on the mound for the Kansas City Royals (7-5) and Alex Gordon came up with the big hit to win it 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th against the Toronto Blue Jays (5-7). Kansas City went 4-2 on the home stand and are tied with Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central.

On the Mound

Santana went 8 good innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), on 7 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 4 on the day. He also allowed one home run to Edwin Encarnacion, his 4th round tripper surrendered in three starts. Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth on received the win.

At the Plate

Chris Getz doubled with with one out in the ninth and Gordon singled him home for the walk-off win. Gordon, Cain, and Dyson each had 2 hits on the day. Eric Hosmer returned to duty and went 1-3 with a walk.

This and That

The Royals staff have struck out 105 this season and only walked 31, better than a 3:1 ratio. Kansas City batters have only hit 4 home runs in the first 12 games. Their opponents have hit 13.

Player of the Game

Santana was a strong candidate but we have to go with the walk-off hit and Alex Gordon. It is Gordon’s second POG of 2013. Here is an updated list of this season’s winners.

The Blue Jays

Brandon Morrow was stolid, earning the quality start by going 6 innings and only allowing 2 runs. Encarnacion’s dinger was his second on the season. He is only hitting .133 thus far.

Up Next

The Royals are off Monday (no recap on Tuesday). They travel to Atlanta where Jeremy Guthrie (2-0) will face Kris Medlen (1-0) Tuesday at 6:10.

AL Central Notes

Detroit Tigers ( 7-5 ): The Tigers pounded the A’s 10-1 on Sunday. Austin Jackson went 4-6 with a home run, 3 RBI, and 3 runs. Torii Hunter added 3 hits, an RBI, and 2 runs in the victory.

Cleveland Indians ( 5-6 ): Center fielder Michael Bourn had 3 hits, including a home run, which was the only run the Indians were able to put on the board Sunday.

Chicago White Sox (5-7 ): Jack Peavy struck out 11 in 7 innings while only giving up 1 run and 5 hits. Alejandro De Aza and Paul Konerko each homered for the Sox in the 3-1 win.

Minnesota Twins (4-6 ): The Twins were rained out again.
