French defender Aurelien (Au-ree-lee-in) Collin joined Sporting Kansas City’s central defense early in the 2011 season after impressing as a guest trialist that March. Born in the north Paris commune of Enghien-les-Bains, Collin came up through the youth systems at CS Sedan Ardennes, Amiens SC, and Spanish club Mallorca.
made his first full professional appearance for Scottish Premier League side Gretna F.C. in 2007 where he went on to make 19 appearances before moving to Greek club Panserraikos in 2008 after several trials with English clubs failed to result in permanent contracts. His time in Greece was short though, having played in only 9 matches before moving to Wrexham F.C., a Welsh club playing in the lower leagues of England to finish the 2008-2009 season.
During the summer of 2009, Aurelien moved again to Portugal’s Liga Zon Sagres with Vitoria Setubal where he played in 33 matches and scored 3 goals before coming to Kansas City following his contract’s end. So far he has made 53 appearances and scored 6 goals.
Collin, a powerful and fiery defender known for wearing his emotions on his sleeve, has done well at Sporting Kansas City and quickly established himself as Matt Besler’s partner in the center of the defense that led the MLS in clean sheets in 2012.
Teammate CJ Sapong has said, “He’s a ball-winner and frustrates the hell out of forwards because they can’t get into a rhythm around him. He’s intimidating. He’s the type of defender that you know forwards are going to be thinking about the night before the game.”
Collin also gives Sporting KC an extra threat in the box for corner kicks as he has shown proficiency in scoring headers.
The 27-year old, 6’2” Frenchman has become popular for his style and is pursuing an online degree in fashion design outside of soccer. Collin is also popular among fans as he often gives away his jersey to a lucky Sporting Park attendee after home matches. He also has made a video series titled “Collin’s Corner” where he gives away his advice for life, tanning, women, and even tanning (his habits for tanning often battle against manager Peter Vermes’ rule of no sunbathing within 72 hours of matches).
Collin claims to have moved to the MLS for the stability after his nomadic career up to now, and grew up as a fan of American hip-hop and movies. His tweets are often humorous (and in a French accent), which you can find @ampC2 on Twitter.
