Meet Sporting Kansas City: Graham Zusi

Graham Zusi is another star and fan favorite that has spent his entire professional career with Sporting Kansas City since being drafted 23rd overall in 2009. The Orlando, Florida native sometimes called “Zeus” played in college for Maryland where he helped the team win national championships in 2004 and 2008.

Zusi, a talented midfielder, has made 99 appearances for Sporting Kansas City so far in his career while netting 12 goals. He is often depended upon to help set the pace for the team and orchestrates many of the attacking moves. After two years of being an important squad player, Zusi had his breakout year in 2011 earning himself a call-up to the United States national team. Since his first cap against Venezuela on January 21st, 2012 Zusi has acquired 9 caps and scored a goal for the U.S. team.

His ability has been demonstrated by a few incredible set piece goals from distance, as well as his many assists. In 2012 Graham Zusi led the MLS with 15 assists on the year, and ranked 3rd in club history for most assists in a season.

Zusi set another club record in 2012 as he took 150 corner kicks, which ranks 3rd all-time in MLS history. His performances during the season earned him many accolades as he was named to the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star team and 2012 MLS Best XI, and was a 2012 Volkswagen Most Valuable Player Finalist.

Zusi’s traditional match day begins with breakfast at Simply Breakfast where he has chocolate chip pancakes, breakfast potatoes, turkey sausage, and a gallon of water. He names playing in the opening match at Sporting Park, scoring for the U.S. national team, and winning the College Cup at Maryland as his favorite sports memories.
