Recruiting Roundup: Kansas Adds Corner, Mizzou Sees Exodus

There has been a lot of movement on the recruiting and transfer front. Here is a quick breakdown of what is going on at Missouri, Kansas, and Kansas State.

KANSAS

Another signing, another junior college player.

Charlie Weis added one last recruit to his 2013 class with the signing of cornerback Brandon Hollomon. The speedy defensive back from LA Pierce adds depth at a position of need for the Jayhawks who had one of the worst secondaries in all of college football last season. Kansas had an in on the corner who is friends with Jayhawk recruits Marquel Combs and Marcus Jenkins-Moore.

Hollomon is not your average junior college corner in that he has 4×3 eligibility at Kansas. As an early graduate he is allowed four years to complete three seasons for Kansas so in some ways he can be treated like a high school recruit. He should be at KU for practices this summer.

MISSOURI

Missouri seems to be losing more players than they are gaining players. First, the football team learned that running back recruit Markel Smith has decommitted from the program. Smith said Missouri isn’t out of his plans entirely but he just wanted to be sure he was making the right decision. He has offers from Iowa and Ole Miss and has looks from other schools like Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Kansas State was also in on him but they are said to be done recruiting running backs for the rest of the 2014 class after landing Dalvin Warmack.

Smith is a border-line four-star recruit from St. John Vianney high school in St. Louis, Missouri. He rushed for 2,342 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior last season.

On the basketball end of things, guards Negus Webster-Chan and Dominique Bull are transferring from Missouri because of playing time. If Phil Pressey chooses to return, the starting backcourt would not include either player and the first guard off the bench would likely be four-star recruit Wesley Clark.

Another player who isn’t a Tiger and will apparently not have a chance to be one is North Carolina State freshman Rodney Purvis. Purvis is transfering from the school but will not be allowed to attend Missouri or Cincinnati because the N.C. State plans to play both schools in the non-conference season in the near future.

Frank Haith is in on Seton Hall transfer Aaron Cosby, who is choosing between the Tigers and Illinois. Cosby averaged 12.6 points and 3 assists per game for the Pirates last season. The soon-to-be junior will decide later this month after making visits to both schools.

KANSAS STATE

Freshman guard Michael Orris has been given his release to transfer from K-State. The former three-star recruit saw cleanup action in 15 games this season, averaging 0.3 points in 3.3 minutes per game.

“I have really enjoyed my time at K-State,” Orris said. “It is difficult to leave my friends, teammates, and coaches, but I think this decision is best for my future in basketball. I will always be appreciative of the opportunity given to me by Coach Weber to come here and the support by all those involved at K-State.”
