Chiefs Restructure Tyson Jackson Contract (Update #2)

Tyson Jackson will be a Kansas City Chief in 2013.

Bill Williamson of ESPN has reported the Chiefs have restructured Jackson’s contract for the 2013 season to keep him in Kansas City. It is not immediately known how much money the Chiefs will save.

Jackson was the first draft pick of the Scott Pioli era, selected with the third overall pick in the 2009 draft. He has started 46 games, recording five sacks and 113 tackles. Jackson set a career high in sacks last season with three.

Pro Football Focus acknowledges Jackson was selected too high, but notes he is an excellent run defender in a 3-4 scheme and is worth retaining after having his deal restructured.

This doesn’t mean criticism towards Jackson hasn’t been high. The Chiefs have used five first rounds selections on defensive linemen since 2002, three of them in within the top six picks: Ryan Sims (2002), Tamba Hali (2006), Glenn Dorsey (2008), Tyson Jackson (2009), and Dontari Poe (2012). The lack of production from Sims, Dorsey, and Jackson, the less than spectacular rookie performance from Poe, and Hali’s move from defensive end to linebacker has frustrated Chiefs fans who expected more from such valuable picks.

We’ll have more on Jackson’s deal here as more information comes in.

UPDATE #1: Tamba Hali is excited about the moves. Check.

UPDATE #2: Williamson is reporting Jackson will make up to $5.2 million in 2013, down nearly $9 million from the $14 million he was scheduled to make. Jackson can still become a free agent in 2014.

What this means for Jackson’s salary cap number, I don’t know, but it would be reasonable to think it will be at least cut in half from the more than $17 million number he had before the new agreement.
