Free Agency Options The Chiefs Should Consider: WRs

The biggest Kansas City Chiefs free agent is none other than Dwayne Bowe.   Last year the Chiefs used the franchise tag on Bowe and he retaliated by holding out.  The Chiefs can’t afford such moves this year.  Bowe’s production was down significantly to 59 catches and 801 yards in 2012, his lowest output in three years.  Do we blame the holdout, or the carousel of quarterbacks for the Chiefs?  Either way, the Chiefs wide receivers have to get better in 2013.

Current Chiefs Wide Receivers:

It is very difficult to know if the Chiefs current stable of receivers is good enough to take the Chiefs all the way.  They’ve never had a quarterback who could deliver the ball.  Most would say that Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, and McCluster should be good enough.  There is plenty of natural talent in those four players.  However, Bowe may be done in Kansas City, and that would mean someone has to step in.

This year’s wide receiver free agents is one of the richest crops in years.  Bowe of course is the top 2 or 3 on the list, but let’s look at the others.

Out of the many free agent wide receivers, these eight could be the #1 or #2 receiver on most teams.  Cruz had 86 receptions for 1092 yards.  Stokley had 45 for 544 yards. Wallace had 64 for 836 yards. Welker is the prize of the bunch with 118 catches for 1354 yards.  Jennings had 36 for 366 yards.  The most important thing to notice about this list is that Dwayne Bowe matches them all except Cruz and Welker.  And that’s with Quinn and Cassel throwing to him, not Manning, Brady, or Rodgers.

The most important free agent wide receiver is the one the Chiefs already have, Dwayne Bowe.  If he is simply unwilling to talk, and the Chiefs don’t franchise him, there are many others available.
