Preseason polls and rankings don’t have a lot of bearing on things at the end of the day, but that doesn’t mean they’re not fun to look over with a passing glance or perhaps even a discerning stare. Today fans of baseball and, more to the point, college baseball got a little bit of a treat as Baseball America published their Preseason College Top-25 Rankings.
It might not be earth shattering news but it does make the college, professional and youth baseball seasons seem just a little bit closer. With baseball comes spring, and given how cold it was in Kansas City today, that’s a very happy thought.
Sitting at #1 in the Top-25 is the University of North Carolina. Anyone who has even a vague knowledge of the game at the college level knows that the Tarheels have a powerhouse program. What you may not know, and I myself didn’t until I read the article, is that this is the first time that UNC has been ranked at the top heading into the year.
If you’re about to click on the above link to see where the local schools sit, be forewarned you won’t find any of them listed.
Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri did not make the cut.
Neither did Creighton, Wichita State or Missouri State.
If we expand things out to our local conferences, the SEC is well represented. Missouri may not have cracked the list but eight of the Tigers’ peers did. When it comes to BA’s Top-25, no conference in the country can match the SEC in terms of the quantity of teams to make the cut, nor can any conference match the quality. The Southeastern Conference can lay claim to three of the top-5, six of the top-11 and none of them just barely slipped onto the bottom of the list. Representing the SEC are: #2 Vanderbilt, #3 Arkansas, #5 Mississippi State, #7 South Carolina, #10 LSU, #11 Kentucky, #13 Mississippi, #17 Florida.
The baseball landscape isn’t nearly as rosy in Big 12 country as the conference landed just two schools on the list. Oklahoma checks in at #19 and newcomer TCU is actually the current standard bearer at #14.
Now, lets get to spring and get to some games!
