In an offseason such as this one for the Kansas City Chiefs, there are a lot of big days that will determine the success and failure of the 2013 season. March 12th, the start of Free Agency is the next big day.
Kansas City has many free agents, but there is a short list of those that are really important to the future of the Chiefs.
The problem is this: each starter you allow to let go in free agency creates a hole that must be filled through that same route or through the draft. See the Brandon Carr to Stanford Routt “downgrade” of last offseason, and eventual release of Stanford Routt to see how that can sometimes hurt a team significantly.
Dwayne Bowe is the most significant free agent. Because no other wide receivers have stepped up this year, Bowe would leave a huge hole should he not be resigned. Branden Albert is a quality tackle and because of injury concerns, should be a fairly cheap resign. Peyton Hillis and Glenn Dorsey would leave holes that need to be filled, but neither are Pro Bowl quality players and aren’t quite as important. Dustin Colquitt on the other hand is one of the best punters in the league and a Pro Bowl player.
Fortunately, the Chiefs are sitting in a good financial position. According to ESPN’s John Clayton, the Chiefs have over $30 million in cap space available. This purse should allow them to sign at least one or two of the big name free agents that hit the market.
The list is long, but here are a few names that could help:
- QB – Joe Flacco, Matt Moore, Drew Stanton
- WR – Mike Wallace
- TE – Dustin Keller, Fred Davis
- OT – Ryan Clady, Jake Long
- DL – Michael Johnson, Randy Starks, Richard Seymour
- LB – Anthony Spencer, Paul Kruger, Shaun Phillips
- DB – Brent Grimes, Aqib Talib, Sean Smith
In addition to these possibilities, there are many trade options to explore. There are plenty of trade rumors swirling around Seahawks QB Matt Flynn and 49ers QB Alex Smith and both could be an upgrade for the Chiefs. The trading period starts the same time and day as free agency. Andy Reid and John Dorsey not only have money at their disposal, but the number one pick in April’s draft.
Lots of changes need to be made to the roster which means the next several months should be very exciting.
