Jayhawks and Wildcats have been racking up the lion’s share of Big 12 player of the week honors and now it appears that the Missouri Tigers are getting into the act though of course they’re now in a different conference (and it still feels unnatural). On Monday, the SEC announced Phil Pressey as the conference player of the week. That gives Mizzou the honors in two of the last three weeks after Laurence Bowers received similar accolades on December 24th.
The Tigers only played one game last week but Pressey came up huge as he pushed his team to their narrow 66-64 victory over Bucknell on Saturday. In front of the home crowd in Columbia, the Missouri’s point guard scored a season high 26 points on 10-22 shooting. He also finished the game with five assists, three rebounds and was 3-6 from beyond the arc. He did all this while staying on the floor for all but one minute of the game.
In the second half of the game Pressey was at his best. All of his assists, rebounds and three point makes came after the break as did 19 of his game high 26 points.
Currently third on the team in scoring average (13.6 ppg) he leads the SEC in assists by a wide margin. Pressey’s 7.6 assists per game average is nearly three assists better than anyone else in the conference. Florida’s Scottie Wilbekin is second with 4.7 apg. In terms of other conference statistical rankings Pressey is 11th in steals (1.71 spg) and 15th in scoring.
