Andy Reid and Michael Vick to the Kansas City Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a very disappointing season thus far in 2012, and with two games left you can’t help but turn your attention to the offseason. Not many people thought at the beginning of the year that these Chiefs would be this bad, let alone be in the running for the number one pick in the 2013 NFL draft. No matter how you look at this season, there must be changes in the organization from top to bottom.

Although Scott Pioli has had some decent drafts in his tenure with the Chiefs, there are already rumors swirling that he, and head coach Romeo Crennel, will not return to next season. These rumors get fans thinking about possible replacements for Pioli and Crennel. My colleague Chip Garrison recently wrote an article suggesting the Chiefs bring in Bill Polian as General Manager for next season.

This turns our attention to Romeo Crennel and the possible replacements at head coach. Although many of the players in the Chiefs locker room support Crennel, his absolute inability to win games should seal his fate. Therefore, let’s address this assuming he is relieved of the head coach position after the season.

Moving forward, who should the Chiefs hire to be the head coach?

Andy Reid is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles, and after a disappointing season there is a good chance he will not return to his post in 2013. Reid has been with the Eagles since 1999 and has won ten playoff games in those years. How many playoff games have the Chiefs won in that same time period? Zero.

With a young and talented team, and the top pick in the 2013 draft, a fresh start in Kansas City could be just what Andy Reid needs to continue his successful career.

With a new General Manager and head coach, the next step for the Chiefs would be to fill their biggest need – and the most important position on the field – quarterback. The Chiefs could address this need in many ways, through free agency, a creative trade, or through the draft.

So who should the Chiefs get as their next QB?

Michael Vick has recently been demoted to a backup after the Eagles decided to go with their rookie QB Nick Foles as the starter, with the intention of preparing for the future. Vick has a special relationship with head coach Andy Reid. After all, Reid is the one who gave him his second chance after his prison sentence.

Now I know what you’re thinking, Vick is not the long-term answer for the Chiefs. It is patently obvious, considering that he is in his thirties. However, Vick, if he is behind a good offensive line that gives him time in the pocket – which the Chiefs have when healthy – can still be a very dangerous threat. A threat that would be difficult for opponents to game plan against, especially when coupled with Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs run game. A backfield of Michael Vick and Jamaal Charles would have speed like no other team in the NFL, and who knows, maybe it will help convince Dwayne Bowe to stay and sign a long term contract.

There are many positives that come to mind with the additions of Andy Reid and Michael Vick, but the biggest one has to do with the 2013 NFL draft. The addition of Vick as a bridge QB would allow the Chiefs to draft linebacker Manti Te’o, instead of taking a risk and reaching for a quarterback with their number one pick. Teaming Te’o with Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, and Justin Houston, would give the Chiefs one of the best groups of linebackers in the entire NFL. The Chiefs could then draft a QB in the later rounds, as well as in the 2014 draft which would give the young QB time to develop and make the difficult transition to the NFL.
