Today yet another move and another piece of the team’s future fell into place as they officially announced the signing of Claudio Bieler. The 28-year old native of Argentina has been playing in Ecuador’s Serie A for LDU Quito in recent years with 57 goals scored in 110 league games. His addition as a Designated Player to Sporting’s roster gives the team another option on their attack, and one that will offer a bit of variety playing along side more physical guys like Bunbury and Sapong.
Aside from his ability to score goals, Bieler is noted for his “technical proficiency” and creativity and those elements will surely augment what is already a deep and vastly talented roster.
The team needed a bona fide goal scorer and as fans that’s exactly what ended up under our Christmas tree today. It’s hard not to be excited about this move given the type of player he is and looking at how he can fit in and complement the talent already on the roster.
For more on the addition of Bieler, and given I’m not quite a soccer savant at this point, here are some links from other sources that are worth checking out:
- The team’s official site has an article up about the signing as well as another that features some quotes from the press conference.
- Last night SBN’s The Daily Wiz published a piece on Bieler as his impending signing was hardly a secret and followed that up with a more in depth piece on how he will fit in with the team.
- Down the Byline also had some thoughts on the signing today.
Here’s a link to a video that SKC shared on YouTube that features some shots of Bieler in action followed by some thoughts from Peter Vermes.
