While we were focused on whether or not the Royals would make a trade during baseball’s Winter Meetings this week, Sporting KC was doing some wheeling and dealing of its own. The primary difference being that our beloved soccer team actually pulled a couple of moves off with other teams.
In the first trade of the week, on Monday, they sent Michael Harrington to the Portland Timbers. In exchange for Harrington, the team’s 2007 first round pick in the MLB SuperDraft, Sporting received allocation money.
The University of North Carolina product was named the franchises Rookie of the Year after he contributed three goals and four assists while starting 27 games in 2007. In six MLS seasons he’s logged 11,633 minutes on the pitch ranking him ninth all time in the annals of Sporting’s history. However his playing time has dropped off in recent years and he was limited to just 877 minutes during 2012. He did not see action in the playoffs this season or last.
In their second deal of the week, this one announced on Wednesday, Sporting acquired midfielder Josh Gardner from the Montreal Impact. In exchange for the 30 year old veteran, SKC sent its highest second round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft to Montreal.
Gardner, a first round pick of the LA Galaxy back in 2004, has played sparingly in five MLS seasons (2004-2006, 2011 and 2012) and has also spent time in some lower level professional leagues. Last year with Montreal he was limited by an injury sustained early on in the season. All told, he appeared in six games, starting five of them for the Impact while logging 451 minutes.
Other Sporting Kansas City News:
- The team waived defender Korede Aiyegbusi after three seasons with the team. The 2010 second round pick out of NC State appeared in nine games with the team since being drafted and started just two. In 2012 he saw the field for a total of 19 minutes. Since his option was not picked up, Aiyegbusi is available for selection in the Re-Entry Draft.
- Stage 1 of that draft took place today with only one player, Maicon Dos Santos being selected by the Chicago Fire. Stage 2 will be held next Friday.
- On Tuesday, The Daily Wiz passed along the rumor that Sporting may be pursuing Czech striker Borek Dockal.
